Waterford - Dr. Chester James Richmond, Jr., age 76, of Shawandasee Rd., died Wednesday, December 29, 2010, unexpectedly at his home.
He was born in Bridgeport, CT on October 12, 1934, the son of Chester and Martha Bakiel Richmond and was raised in Fairfield. He graduated from Tufts University where he played on the Tufts football team. He received his Doctorate in Dentistry from the University of Maryland, and his Masters Degree in Oral Surgery from the University of Maryland Graduate School. He served as a Captain in the United States Army from 1962 â€" 1964 as an oral surgeon at Fort Ord in California and Fort Sam Houston in Texas.
Dr. Richmond practiced in New London, Groton and Essex, the last 23 years in partnership with Dr. Edward J. Reynolds. Chet was a member of the New London County Dental Association, Blackhall Country Club and the New London Country Club. He loved Scuba diving and was a certified master diver. He also was an avid fishing and golf enthusiast. He had four hole-in ones in four decades.
In addition to his loving wife June he is survived by three sons, Chester J. Richmond, III of Hobe Sound, FL; Brad T. Richmond of Guilford, CT; Scott D. Richmond of Bethlehem, CT as well as three step-daughters, Dale Goulekas of Niantic; Diane Hillyer of Waterford; Dorene Wadsworth of Waterford and two step-sons, William Wadsworth of Waterford and James Wadsworth of Niantic. Chet is survived by his only sibling, his brother Bruce Richmond of Fairfield. Chet also had five grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; two step-great grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 1-3 P.M. at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., in Niantic. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
