Obituary

Waterford-William P. Pukas, 57, of Waterford, passed away on Monday, October 26, 2009, with his family by his side. He was born on July 21, 1952, in New London, the only son of the late Paul and Marion Pukas.

Bill's greatest love in life was his children, Corey and Paul, and his two beautiful granddaughters, Lindsay and Kylie. He loved gardening, cooking, and sunbathing. His favorite place "to take in the sun" was Jamaica with his family and friends. In his final weeks, he shared quality time with his daughter cooking together.

Bill was a native New Londoner. He graduated from New London High School in 1970. He earned his bachelor of science in education from Southern Connecticut State College in 1974. He went on to earn his Masters Degree at Sacred Heart University and then completed his education by earning his 6th year Certificate of Administration and Supervision from Southern Connecticut State University in 1992.

Mr. Pukas began his professional career in 1974 as an educator at "home" in the New London Public Schools until his retirement in June of 2008. During his tenure Bill served as an elementary teacher at Harbor School for many years. He later served as an administrator in the role of Director of Curriculum. In his final years Bill was the principal of Jennings, Harbor, and Nathan Hale schools. Throughout his tenure he touched the lives of many students and co-workers through his incredible devotion to education.

He is survived by his wife, Deborah (Shea) Pukas; his loving and devoted daughter, Corey P. Shea and his son, Paul M. Pukas, of Waterford. His two precious granddaughters, Lindsay Perkins of East Lyme and Kylie Pukas of Groton; his in-laws Joseph and Louise Shea of New London; his dearest friends, Peter and Carol Mandras and their daughters Allie and Nicole of Stamford; Tony and Gail Diminico and their daughter Casey of Bethel. He was predeceased by his sister, Judith A. Pasqualini.

The funeral will assemble at 10:15 a.m. on Friday, October 30, 2009 at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave. New London and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, 17 Squire St., New London. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, 600 Jefferson Ave., New London. Visitation will be held on Thursday 6:00-8:00 PM at Thomas L. Neilan and Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave. New London.
