Waterford- Cornelia “Connie” F. Cregan, 81, of Waterford, died February 9, 2021, at the Lawrence and alsoMemorial Hospital in New London, CT.
Connie was born in New London June 11, 1939, the daughter of James and Kathryn Moriarity Cregan. Connie attended St. Mary’s School in New London, the Academy of the Holy Family in Baltic, CT and received her diploma from the Catholic High School of Baltimore in 1957. Connie graduated from the Joseph Lawrence School of Nursing at the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland in 1961, earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Salem College in Salem, West Virginia in 1972 and obtained her master’s degree in health education from the University of West Virginia in 1974.
During her career as a registered nurse Connie worked at the National Institute of Health Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD, Johns Hopkins University Medical Center, taught medical surgical nursing at the Piedmont School of Nursing in Atlanta, GA and worked at various hospitals in the Atlanta Georgia area. Connie also helped develop and teach a federally funded community health care program in Appalachia in West Virginia. Not only was Connie described as an “excellent nurse”, she also was loved by her students.
Connie served her country as a reservist in the Army National Guard, retiring at the rank of Major.
Connie was a very spiritual person. She was an active participant in St. Mary’s Church and St. Joseph’s Church in New London, CT, serving as a Eucharistic Minister and singing in the choirs. Connie also expanded her knowledge of her faith and leadership by earning a certificate from the Women’s Leadership Institute at the Hartford Seminary, Hartford, CT.
Among her interests Connie loved teaching, kitties, fishing and being by the water, weather events,
UCONN women’s basketball and professional football (especially if the teams were playing in the snow!).. She is survived by her brother William H. Cregan of Waco, Texas, several cousins and numerous friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Star of the Sea Church on Monday, March 15 at 11:00am, followed by interment in St. Mary Cemetery, New London. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity in Connie’s name.
