Obituary

East Lyme - Bernadette (Bernie) Donacki, 80, of Niantic, died peacefully at home Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021 following a nearly year long battle with lung cancer.
She was born Sept. 25, 1940, in Camden, NJ, the daughter of Stephen and Catherine (Wasiolek) Wozniak. Bernie was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. After raising a family of five as a Navy wife, mostly while her husband was out to sea...she entered the workforce in April 1974, retiring from Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London, CT as the Outpatient Billing Supervisor in October 1997.
Bernie loved the water, and could always be found at the beach in New London in her younger years, or frequently taking walks near the water, or being on or near the water in many fashions over her years... She settled with her husband in Niantic's Black Point after all the kids were grown and the six bedroom house they made a home in New London became more then they needed - she wanted to be "near the water..." She also loved gardening and flowers, as well as animals, having included and cared for many a cat, dog, guinea pig, parakeet, and snake as part of the family over the years... In recent years she especially loved visits from her latest great granddaughter Ava!
She married Eugene Donacki, on July 11, 1959, in Camden, NJ; he predeceased her in 2017. Bernie is survived by two sisters, two sons and two daughters, six grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and three step-great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a son and a sister.
Bernie was a strong, independent, and pragmatic lady with a caring and compassionate soul and a demeanor of determination to the very end. She lived life on her terms while still caring for everyone around her. She will be missed by her family and friends, while those closest to her also embrace knowing she has returned to a peace that she has longed for in reuniting with her husband and son...
