Francis J. DeFazio Jr.,88, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2020 surrounded by his three daughters at Middlesex Hospital in Middletown, CT. He was born in Haverhill, MA to Mary C. DeFazio and Francis DeFazio Sr. He lived in East Lyme, CT for 54 years where he built his home, family, and friendships- Ray, Enez who predeceased him, Frances, and Pat. He then moved to The Saybrook at Haddam in Haddam, CT.
At The Saybrook, Francis enjoyed painting, bingo, bird watching, bowling, exercising, walks, and daily games of rummy. He was known for his kindness and gentlemanly ways by his friends and the staff. He treasured his time with his dear friend Carol. They enriched each other’s lives.
Francis went to trade school in Haverhill, MA, and then enlisted in the Air Force and lived abroad in England and France. He returned to finish high school then attended North Eastern University where he graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He completed the Program of Study of Digital Signal Processing from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and earned a Masters degree from UCONN.
Francis retired in 1993 from the Naval Underwater System Center, NUSC where he worked as an electrical engineer. He had 42 years of service between his internship at the Portsmouth Shipyard, Air Force, and NUSC.
While living in Boston, he met his wife Jacklyn Poutney of 34 years. Jacklyn graduated from the Massachusetts School of Art. Their first date was at the Boston Pops. She predeceased him in 1995.
For many years, he was responsible for sending out emails of maps and notices for the “Wednesday Group” sponsored by the New Haven Hiking Club. According to leader Janet B., the club still uses his writings to this day for the hiking, biking, kayaking, and camping outings. He made long time friends (The Gang) Sandy, Rita, Roger, and Renate. He had a strong friendship with Sandy. He made many friends while participating in ballroom, zydeco, swing, and contra dancing in Connecticut and Rhode Island. When out shopping, more often than not, he would run into someone that he knew. He was a long time member of the Appalachain Mountain Club. He was a member of the Mystic Carvers Club where he honed his craft of carving wooden birds.
Francis is survived by his children Janet Harris (Kevin) of Salem, CT and grandchildren Kendra, Kassidy, and Katherine, daughter Julie Graham (Scott) of Granby, CT and grandchild Ellianna, and daughter Jennifer Potts (Jason) of East Lyme, CT and granddogs. He is also survived by cousins Anna and Joyce and his sister in law Jane.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there will be no calling hours. Condolences can be made at www.neilanfuneral A private graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday December 12,2020 at 11 A.M. at Union Cemetery in Niantic, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in the name of Francis J.
