Obituary

Janice Elizabeth Murphy Carty, 77 of Waterford CT passed into eternity July 18, 2020 at her home in Waterford CT in the arms of her loving family. Born July 23, 1942 in Dighton MA, she was the eldest child of the late Catherine Louise (Walsh) and James Bower Murphy, Sr.
She attended St. Michael’s Elementary School and Joseph Case High School both in Swansea MA where she was salutatorian of the Class of 1959. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from The College of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station NJ and a Master of Science Degree at Boston College, majoring in Immunology.
After working part time for a family business, she enrolled in accounting courses at Boston College where she excelled. She changed careers to assume the role of accounting for all the family businesses for 4 decades.
On September 10, 1966 she married Thomas J. Carty Jr in Falmouth Massachusetts. She is survived by her husband, son Thomas J. Carty III, and his wife Rosamaria Leon Carty. She is also survived by her brother James B. Murphy Jr., his wife Joan, and 3 nieces, Kara (Murphy) Pavao; Katherine Murphy; and Jennifer (Murphy) Carter. A special pleasure to Janice were her two grandchildren, Marisol Louise Carty, a sophomore at Yale University and Thomas J. Carty IV, a freshman at the Watkinson School in Hartford. She closely followed their academics, attended their piano recitals, cross-country meets and ultimate frisbee matches.
A highlight of Janice’s life was the marriage of her son Thomas to Rosamaria Leon Gavonel in Lima, Peru on January 6, 2001. The Leon-Gavonel family quickly welcomed Janice and her husband Tom into their Peruvian family. For sporting activities, Janice most enjoyed many family backpacking trips in the White Mountains of NH, downhill and cross-country skiing, often with her brother Jim and his family.
Janice and the family are especially grateful for the exceptional patient care of her oncologists; and, in particular, she bonded with affection to the Health Care staffs of both Waterford Smilow and the 14th Floor, North Wing of the Smilow Cancer Center in New Haven.
Janice’s magnetic personality and unusual ability to remember family details fostered numerous enduring friendships with those whom she encountered in her exercise class at the Waterford Community Center, Church, and world travel. Her service activities include The Child & Family Agency of New London and the Bereavement Committee at St. Joseph’s Church.
Arrangements are in the care of Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home of New London. Respects may be paid to Janice during calling hours from 4 to 6 pm, Thursday July 23rd at the Neilan Funeral Home 12 Ocean Ave New London. Limited numbers and Covid 19 restrictions will be observed. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday at 10 am at St. Joseph’s Church 37 Squire Street New London followed by burial in a family plot at St. Joseph Cemetery Taunton MA. Because of the risks of COVID19, there will be a celebration of Janice’s life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Janice’s name may be made to The Child & Family Agency of New London or The Smilow Cancer Center.
