Obituary

East Lyme- Herbert “Herb” O’Connell, 90, of Niantic and New Castle, Delaware died Monday June 24, 2019. He was the son of the late Frank and Alice O’Connell, and was born in North Dighton, Massachusetts on September 13, 1928. Herb graduated from Coyle High School in Taunton, Mass. in 1946 and was inducted into the Coyle High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 1995. Herb graduated from Harvard University in 1950, where he lettered in football. After serving in the United States Air Force, as a meteorologist, for four years during the Korean War, he moved to Connecticut in 1955. Herb lived in Rocky Hill for ten years, Simsbury for thirty-eight years and South Windsor for ten years before moving to New Castle, Delaware in 2017. He spent his entire working years employed by United Technology, mostly in the Pratt & Whitney division. After retiring in 1991, Herb traveled extensively, reaching all seven continents. Herb loved being in his summer home at Black Point Beach in Niantic where there were many gatherings of family and friends. He enjoyed many activities including photography and skiing. Herb was a member of the American Meteorological Society and the Harvard Varsity Club. Herb was predeceased by his beloved wife Louise in 1985, daughter Carolyn Stanley of South Windsor in 2012, brother Harry of North Dighton, MA in 1989, sister Margaret Smith of Attleboro, MA in 1991 and sister Barbara Bolger of Vero Beach, FL in 2014. He is survived by his daughter Phyllis Quinlan and her husband Neil of New Castle, Delaware and his son-in-law Mark Stanley of South Windsor. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Neil Quinlan Jr. and his wife Suzanne of Manchester, NH, Mary Quinlan of Vernon, Kevin Quinlan and his wife Georgina of Miami, FL, Brendan Stanley and his wife Erica of Boston, MA, Allison Quinlan of Fairfax, VA, Ryan Stanley of South Windsor, and Conor Stanley and his wife Katie of Glastonbury, and six great grandchildren: Logan Stanley, Taylor Epps & Carter Stanley, Meara Quinlan and Miranda & Henry Quinlan. Herb will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday June 28, 2019 at St. Agnes Church 22 Haigh Avenue, Niantic. Interment will be private in Simsbury Cemetery, Simsbury.
