Obituary

Naomi Jaivin, of New London, passed peacefully at home on December 16th after a long struggle with cancer. The youngest daughter of Leon and Jessie Dorsky, she was born in New London on May 13th, 1930. She was a loving wife to Lewis Jaivin, who passed in 2013, a devoted and wonderful mother to Linda and Jonathan (‘BJ’), an adoring mother-in-law to Melissa, godmother to Annie Spinale and her son Eddie, and a loyal and caring friend to many.

A true-blue New Londoner, Naomi could still sing the anthem of Harbor School at the age of 88. She lived within a few steps of the Thames River for all her adult life. She dreamed of travel, and while she once went as far as Australia with Lew to visit Linda, and greatly enjoyed her trips to California to be with Melissa and BJ, she spent most of her life in New London, where she contributed to community life at various times as a literacy volunteer, a volunteer for a mental health organization, and an advocate for rescue dogs, among other things.

As a Certified Personnel Consultant, she helped Lew manage American Personnel Service and later ran her own business, “The Resume Writer". She was always very good at understanding people and helping them see their own strengths, and for years, she worked as a consultant who ran workshops at Electric Boat where she helped demobbed naval personnel transition to civilian life, working with them on their resumes, preparing them for interviews and helping them build the confidence they’d need to make this step - she was very proud of this work and the men she served.

Naomi was a big reader, an enthusiastic gardener, and a generous hostess, who could always be persuaded to bang out a few show tunes on the piano for a singalong, with a repertoire that included ‘Moon River’, ‘More’ and even ‘Pistol Packin’ Mama’. She had a good sense of fun that lasted until the end.

She is survived by her children, Linda and Jonathan; her daughter-in-law Melissa; her brother-in-law and his wife George and Estelle Jaivin, and brother-in-law Sheldon Levine. She will be hugely missed.

Special thanks to her devoted friends of Harbor House (especially David Haddad, Arthur Brendze, Arnold Feibel, Fran Romann, Yvonne and Bob Kelly), Dawn McDermott of Center for Hospice Care - Southeast Connecticut, and the amazing caregivers of Assured Quality Homecare.

Funeral services will be held on December 17th at 2 pm at Neilan Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Avenue, New London. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice Care - Southeast Connecticut, Temple Beth El, or Friday’s Rescue.
