Obituary

Eugenia Bossart Hartley, of Niantic, CT, peacefully left this world surrounded by her devoted, loving family on December 24th 2017. She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Robert Hartley, and her four children, R. Corydon Hartley of Merrimack, NH (Linda), E. Cheryl Wisnewski of East Lyme, CT (Michael), Kris Hartley Wohlgemuth, of Niantic, CT, and Kit Hartley of Niantic, CT (Steve). She is also survived by six grandchildren (Gina, Rob, Julie, Kelsy, TJ, and Cory), six great-grandchildren, her sister Patricia Halverson of Calgry, Canada, and her loyal canine companion, Nittany.

Eugenia "Genie" was born on November 18, 1928, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Dr. Paul Bossart and Eugenia Brown Bossart. She was predeceased by her parents, and her brothers, Richard, Phil, and Paul.

Genie began her life in Pittsburgh PA, attended West Deer High School, where she found her love of athletics, which continued when she attended Penn State University in 1946, majoring in physical education. At Penn State, she was a member of the rifle team and the Phi Mu sorority. It was at Penn State where she met her husband, Robert. Shortly after her graduation, they were married on June 17th, 1950, starting the first three months of their adventurous lives together working and living in a fire tower on Mt. Coeur d'Alene in Idaho. As a military spouse, Genie faithfully followed her husband through many moves, traveling all over the country. The pair eventually settled in Niantic, CT, in 1961, where they raised their family. In Niantic, Genie spent many years working for the East Lyme school system, until her final retirement at the age of 80.

Genie was an avid sports fan, and her favorite teams included Penn State and Steelers Football, and UCONN womens' basketball. Her passions included playing Bridge, golfing, traveling the world, enjoying days and evenings at the Niantic Bay Yacht club, and spending time with her beloved family and friends. She was of a generous heart, opening her home on countless occasions to any person in need, often for extended periods of time. A devout servant of God, and member of Christ Lutheran church, Genie was always willing to help the less fortunate, donating funds and her time to local and national charities. Genie was a gracious hostess and socialite, and enthusiastically entertained family and friends for all occasions.

Genie lived an adventurous and full life. She will be missed dearly by her family, and will be remembered fondly by all who met her. We love you, Nana!
