Obituary

WATERFORD--Bernard Loyal Plaisted, 82, of Waterford died Tuesday, March 21 at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, New London.

Bernard was born on Oct. 14, 1934 in Washington D.C. to George and Lucille Plaisted. He was attending Bulkeley High School in New London when it closed, graduating from New London High School in 1953. As a member of the U.S. Army he served in Germany.

He married Ruth Esada in 1957. On Feb. 2, 2017, Bernie and Ruth celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

He is survived by Ruth, their five children and their children's spouses: Katherine Choiniere and husband, Paul of Griswold; Steven Plaisted and wife, Pamela of Maryland ; Michael Plaisted and wife, Maggie of Maryland; David Plaisted and wife, Debbie of North Stonington; and Christopher Plaisted and wife, Rachel of California. Bernie is also survived by nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and stepfather John Twilley, Bernie was predeceased by his sister Marianne Chappell.

He is also survived by Marianne's husband, Harold Chappell, Bernie's best friend and mini-golf partner.
Bernie was a long-time employee of Kalamian's Rug Shop in New London, before retiring 20 years ago.
It was often said of Bernie that he was "a great guy," known for his kind, generous and nonjudgmental demeanor.

Bernie loved the outdoors, whether traveling around the country with Ruth in their RV or camping with his extended family.

A private family get-together will be held at a later date to celebrate Bernie's life. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name can be made to the National Park Foundation, 1110 Vermont Ave. NW, Suite 200, Washington, DC 20005 or the Sierra Club Commemoratives/Memorials, 2101 Webster St., Suite 1300, Oakland, CA 94612.
