Obituary

Groton- Virginia Ruth Landis, 87 passed into eternal life on December 24, 2020 at Lawrence Memorial Hospital with her son, Shawn at her side .Ginny, as she was known by many lived a rich and full lifeline that she was extremely proud of.

Virginia was born on July 15, 1933 in Hartford, the daughter of Helen and John Landis. Virginia graduated from Mount St. Joseph’s High School and married Robert Kenneth Powers in 1950 to begin their life together. The couple settled for a brief time in Vernon, before moving to Niantic where their first business venture began. Doc’s Flavor King was started as an Ice Cream business and the adventures unfolded along with four wonderful children. The business exists today, owned and operated by the eldest son, Michael. As a family business goes, we became the family that worked together and played together which encompassed many long hours which was commonplace. Ginny drove an Ice cream truck for the business for a time and was well known over at Electric Boat during the lunch hour.
As time passed, Virginia decided to take another path and began her fruitful 47 year career in Real Estate as a broker, manager and an instructor while maintaining her family life. Ginny enjoyed the people part of the business and was well known for her calming attitude, her levelheaded sensibility and patience. She will be missed by many.
In her later years once, the family was grown; Ginny became a Eucharistic minister and serviced many locations in the community.
Upon moving to the Groton Regency, she enjoyed her audio books, occasional lunches and dinners spent with her small circle of dear friends and family.

Virginia is survived by her three children, Michael Powers of East Lyme, Shawn & Kristen Powers of Groton and Nancy Kelley of Niantic.
Along with her children, she is survived by nine grandchildren, Sherri Lynn and Jeremy Powers, Patrick, Timothy, Daniel and Christopher Kelley, Robert Kenneth III and Anthony Powers, Ashley Garcia and 11 great grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her parents, John and Helen Landis, beloved sister, Janet Bartku, son Robert Powers Jr. and grandson, Shannon Powers.
