Virgilio Julius Cappiello September 27, 1929 - February 2, 2018.

Virgilio (Cap) Cappiello was born in New Haven, Connecticut to Giosue and Vincenzia Cappiello. He was the fourth of five brothers and sisters, Silvio Cappiello, Nina Devoe, Hugo Cappiello, and Maria Budak, who predeceased him.

In his early years he worked at Lucibello’s Bakery. Virgilio studied in the Seminary, but found that he wasn’t suited to the calling. He enlisted in the Air Force, where he served in the Korean War. Always apt with languages, he studied French at UConn after leaving the Air Force and marrying the love of his life Dorothea Buchholz in 1959. He received his master’s degree, and taught French until his retirement from teaching in 1986. Always puttering, which he enjoyed immensely, he had a second retirement career working at Saybrook Hardware where he was a bright spot in everyone’s day. He never met a dog he didn’t like and would have cookies and a scratch for any dog that would visit the shop.

He and his wife Dorothea were the epitome of generosity of spirit and kindness, always helping family and friends with whatever was needed, whether it was moral support, moving, or care in a Nursing Home. They were mom and dad to many of their daughter Cecilia’s friends, and were like family to many who knew them. Cap and Dorothea were the kind of people who lived and enjoyed their lives with an appreciation for the pleasures around them with trips to local museums, picnics at the beach, and enjoyment of the arts.

He was predeceased by his wife of 58 years, Dorothea, is survived by his daughter Cecilia Lins-Morstadt, son-in-law Carl Lins-Morstadt, nieces and nephews Paul Budak, Angela Criscuolo, Kiama-Lise Herres, Catherine Nowicki, Annette Nuñez, and many great nieces and nephews.
