New London- Viola E. Gottwalt, age 90, of Willetts Ave., passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2010, after being stricken ill at home. She was born in New London October 26, 1919, the daughter of Robert Raymond and Esther Horton Hurley. She was the widow of John C. Gottwalt whom she married on May 15, 1937. He died in 1992.
Mrs. Gottwalt was retired, and had been employed at the Nissen Thrift Store in New London. She was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in New London, and had been a member of the St. Joseph Women's Social Club and the Daughters of Isabella. She was also active with the New London Seniors.
She is survived by her daughter Kathleen E. Doser of New London; Grandson William P. Mitchell and his wife Malissa of St. Petersburg, FL; granddaughter Theresa Tessier of Waterford; Great-grandchildren Casey Lynn Mitchell, Cory Mitchell, Randi Cassity and her husband Alyx; and Great-great-granddaughter Alexis Cassity. She is also survived by her former sons-in-law William M. Mitchell and Terry Doser, daughter-in-law Adele Gottwalt; nieces Dorothy Harmon, Carol Bennett, Theresa Crawford, Colleen McCarthy, and Patricia Perrino: and nephews Donald and Michael Feliciano.
She was predeceased by her husband John C. Gottwalt in June of 1992, son Robert C. Gottwalt in August of 1974, and sister Carolyn Feliciano in April of 1991. She was also predeceased by Maggie May, her beloved canine companion of seventeen years.
The funeral will assemble at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial scheduled for 11 A.M. in St. Joseph Church. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. Calling hours are Saturday morning from 9:30 until 10:30 A.M.
