Veronica "Verna" Jones

East Lyme, Ct. Veronica Barbara Jones called "Nana" by most of her family and Verna by all her friends passed away on Sunday March 8, 2009 at Bride Brook Health and Rehabilitation Center in Niantic. She was 89 years old.

She was born on December 13, 1919 in New Britain, Ct., to John and Justyna Sacharko. She was the 7th of 11 children and attended Sacred Heart Primary and New Britain High School.

She married George O. Jones in New Britain, Ct. on December 8, 1945 in Sacred heart Church and after living in New London, Groton, and the Panama Canal Zone she settled in East Lyme, CT. In 1949 after moving to East Lyme, Verna was active in many groups including serving as President of the East Lyme Little League Auxiliary while building the first Little League Fields known as Bucher Park located where the Industrial Park is now located near I95. She served as secretary and state commander of the Wives of Submarine Veterans of WWII and served as a member of Branch 237 Fleet Reserve Auxiliary and Kari-Hill Post #5849 VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband George, her two sons, George H. Jones and his wife Deonna of Scottsboro AL., John P. Jones and his wife Karen of Niantic and her daughter Barbara Mertens and her husband James of Midland, MI., nine grand children, three step grand children and four great grand children; her sister, Sister Mary Raphael of the Daughters of Mary of Immaculate Conception, New Britain, CT., and her two brothers, Ladislaus Sacharko and Cheslaus Sacharko of New Britain also survive her. Her son Matthew Jones and her brothers Stanley Sacharko, Casimer Sacharko, Frank Sacharko, Al. Sacharko, Andrew Sacharko, Wally Sacharko, Ted Sacharko and grand daughter Jennifer Jones predeceased her.

Calling hours will be at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street Niantic, from 4 PM to 7 PM Wednesday March 11, 2009.

Friends and family may gather at the funeral home at 10 AM Thursday morning and proceed to St. Agnes Church, Haigh Avenue, Niantic for a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in the East Lyme Cemetery in Flanders immediately following mass.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations in her memory may be made to St. Agnes Church, Niantic Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut, The American Cancer Society or any charity of the donor's choice.
