Sarah “Sadie” Schelkly
Niantic- Sarah “Sadie” Schelkly, 88, of Niantic passed away on January 22, 2021. She is now in the arms of her loving husband Bill (Buster) who passed away in 2008.
She was born in Dumbarton, Scotland on August 14, 1932, the daughter of Daniel and Mary Kane. She was the youngest of 11 children.
“Sadie” as many of her family and friends referred to her, was retired, having been employed at the former Bureau of Business Practice in Waterford, and the former Latchstring Restaurant in Niantic.
Sarah came to this country from Scotland in 1952 to live with her sisters Cathie and Helen in Astoria, New York. This is where she met her husband Bill. They were married on December 26, 1953. In 1961 they relocated to Niantic where they would raise their family.
Sadie became a US citizen on April 24, 1969.
She is survived by two sons, Scott and his wife Jacqueline Schelkly of East Lyme, and grandchildren Nicole and Jake Schelkly of East Lyme; Mark and his wife Debbie Schelkly of Waterford, and grandchildren Jason and his wife Mindy Schelkly of Norwich, and Matthew Schelkly of Orlando, Florida. Also surviving are three great grandchildren, Haley, Logan and Lincoln. She was predeceased by her husband Bill, her son, Steven, and her 10 siblings: John, Daniel, Sarah, Cathie, May, Michael, Susan, Margaret, Charles, and Helen. She also leaves behind her nieces, Marie Kemeness and her husband Paul of Palm Beach, Florida, Kathleen Calderone of the Villages, Florida, Sharon Perez of Midlothian, VA, Karen Roselle and her dear friend Patsy Hanslik of Houston Texas,, her nephew Jack and Anita Leavy of Massapequa, NY, and her dear friend Ursula “Ushi” Rando of East Lyme, George and Nancy Glendenning of Niantic, her second family. and many, many nieces and nephews in Scotland.
Scott and Jackie would like to thank the staff at Crescent Point where Sadie made her home for the last year for their support, care, and compassion. We will be always be grateful.
We know Sadie is holding hands with Bill, while having a wee cuppa with her sisters.
