Niantic-Ruth Holbrook Mattison, born April 1, 1928, died peacefully at home on October 22, 2014. Born in Braintree, Massachusetts to Frances M. Berry and Porter E. Holbrook. She married Fraser Duncan Mattison in 1949. They have resided in Niantic since 1957. Her husband predeceased her in 2013.

As a homemaker, Ruth enjoyed sewing, baking, and gardening. As a member of the East Lyme chorus and participated in several performances in the 1970's. An avid crafter, she became an early American folk artist in the 1960's and continued painting into her eighties. She was a member of The Historical Society of Early American Decorators (HSEAD) and the Charter Oak Chapter.

Ruth is survived by her children: Donna Mattison-Earls, Patricia (Alan) Herman, Robert Mattison and Stuart (Lorraine) Mattison and eight grandchildren: Sarah, Matthew, Justin, Emily, Ruth, William, Jamie, and Jennifer. She has five great grandchildren. She leaves numerous relatives, friends, and neighbors as well. Her caring, sense of humor, and love will be forever remembered and her presence greatly missed.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, October 27th from 5 to 7 pm at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 28th at 11 AM at the funeral home with a calling hour from 10 to 11 am. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Niantic, CT.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Arlington Ambulance Service, Box 295, 55 Chittenden Dr., Arlington, VT 05250 ; the Niantic Fire Department, 8 Grand St., Niantic, CT 06357, and Center for Hospice Care, 227 Dunham Rd, Norwich, CT 06360 or to a charity of your choice.
