Obituary

New London - Ruth Elizabeth Foye of New London, surrounded by her five loving daughters, left our world on March 8, 2010, after a brief illness.

She was born on Oct. 25, 1917, in Saxonville, Mass., the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (McCann) Byrnes.

Ruth was the beautiful wife of the late Capt. Paul F. Foye, USCG. They were married in Saxonville in 1942. She was an integral part of the many academic, social, and sports related activities at the Coast Guard Academy for over half a century. In 1943 she and Paul moved to New London where their home of 67 years has been the center of much love and gatherings for her family and large extended family.

Ruth graduated from Framingham State College and taught for many years at Nameaug School in New London. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church and of the church's Mothers Circle. Ruth was a woman of many creative talents. An accomplished pianist and organist, she composed her college alma mater and played the piano with the Boston Pops Orchestra under the direction of Arthur Fiedler.

Ruth is survived by her five daughters, Carol Adams and Dr. Gene Adams of New London, Maureen Olsen and RADM Robert Olsen, USCG (Ret.), of Glen Cove, N.Y., Ruth Foye of Nokomis, Fla., Eileen Kelly and Jim Kelly of New London, and Paula Stokley and Allen Stokley of Chester, N.H. Ruth was predeceased by her brother, Joseph Byrnes and her sister, Marion Burke.
