New London - Patricia Ann (McElroy) Rainville, longtime resident of Crystal Ave., New London, died peacefully on Jan. 17, 2009, at Manchester Memorial Hospital.
Pat was born on April 17, 1931, in Bridgeport to the late Paul T. McElroy Sr. and Sally A. Halverson McElroy. Married May 11, 1957, Pat was predeceased by her husband, Joseph W. Rainville on Oct. 16, 1988. Pat was raised in the Stratford area and graduated from Stratford High School in 1949. Pat and Joe relocated to New London in 1963 to support Joe in his 22 year career with the U.S. Navy Submarine Service. From 1972 to 1984, Pat was employed by the City of New London, concluding her tenure there in 1984, after five years as the Assistant City Clerk. After a year at Perry Jewelers in downtown New London, Pat joined the staff at T. L. Neilan and Sons Funeral Home in 1986. Sharp with numbers and details, she enjoyed working with the Neilan family and their dedicated staff for 18 years.

Her hobbies included a tremendous love of reading, gardening, knitting and bowling. Pat bowled in two Groton leagues until her mid 70s. She so loved to shop, especially for antiques and collectibles for herself and her family. Pat's enchantment with her Irish heritage made for momentous trips to Ireland for sightseeing and shopping.

An extremely devoted mother, Pat leaves her five children, Kevin P. Rainville and his wife, Rosemary Viola Rainville of Manchester, Sally A. Rainville and her fiancé, John Godzyk of Glastonbury, Aileen P. Rainville Greene of New London, Joseph P. Rainville and his wife, Lisa Cortino Rainville of Montville and Maureen C. Rainville Sylvia and her husband, Richard of Quaker Hill. Time spent with her grandchildren brought lots of joy to her life. She will be sadly missed by her nine grandchildren, Lily and Teddy Rainville, Matthew Godzyk, Nora and Liam Greene, Erica, Alicia, and Joseph Rainville, and Brittany Sylvia. Also to mourn her passing she leaves three sisters, Maureen McElroy, Margaret McElroy Doyle of Stratford, Kathleen McElroy Pechkis of Fairfield and her sisters-in-law, Vivian McElroy of Derby and Marlene McElroy of Pennsylvania. In addition she leaves numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Pat was predeceased by two brothers, Paul (Timothy) Jr. and John F. McElroy.

On behalf of our parents, the entire Rainville family would like to express our deepest appreciation to Stephen J. Molloy of Quaker Hill for his tremendous support and friendship over the past 60 years. Special thanks also to the staff of 2 East and 3 North, including Rev. Lou Cremonie, Hospital Chaplain, for their most compassionate support and outstanding care.

The Neilan family has been entrusted with Pat's funeral arrangements. Calling hours at the Neilan Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. on Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary's Church of the Sea 10 Huntington St., New London at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. Burial will follow beside her husband in St. Mary's Cemetery

Donations in Pat's memory would be greatly appreciated by The Public Library of New London, 63 Huntington St., New London, CT 06320.
