Michael Hajosy
Niantic- Michael Francis Hajosy (CDR, USN Retired), of Niantic nd Somers Point, N.J., passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Yale New Haven Hospital from a cerebral hemorrhage. In his youth he lived in Willington, CT; Niantic; Sasebo, Japan; Brunswick, GA; Orange Park, FL; Kenitra, Morocco; and York, Maine. He graduated salutatorian from York High School in 1981, lettering in three sports as well as captaining the varsity football team. He was feared and respected by all his gridiron opponents. In 1985 he graduated with honors from the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD with a bachelor’s degree in systems engineering.
During his twenty some years career, he served on various US Navy ships and shore stations. Concurrently, he earned advanced degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Central Florida. He was a systems, nuclear, and ocean engineer. More recently he directed bridge leagues in Niantic, Old Lyme, Guilford, Madison, and Fishers Island.
He was married to Cheryl Godfrey and they have one daughter Cassandra, both of Somers Point, NJ. He is also survived by his father John of Niantic; two brothers, John of South Lyme and Stephen of Greenville, SC.
It is planned that he will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery alongside a large number of his shipmates he worked with at the Pentagon when they perished in the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.
