Mary Stuart
Niantic- Mary M. Stuart, 76, of Niantic, passed unexpectedly in her home Monday, January 29, 2018. She was born in New London May 18, 1941, the daughter of Raymond and Ann Cavanaugh McGarry. She attended local New London schools and received her bachelor’s degree from the College of New Rochelle. She earned master’s degrees in French and Spanish from Central Connecticut State University and had been employed as a language teacher at Montville High School, St. Bernard High School, NFA and Stonington High School. Mary was a loving mother and grandmother and loyal friend to many. Her passions included playing golf and chairing the women’s league at Cedar Ridge, Monday morning bridge games and the New York Times crossword puzzle. She served on the board of numerous local and church committees and volunteered her time supporting Alpha Delta Kappa an International Honorary Organization for Women Educators.
She is survived by two sons, James Stuart and his wife Lynne of Madison and their children Aidan and Owen, Peter Stuart and his wife Liz of Baldwin Harbor, NY and their children Justin, Lily and Patrick; and her sister Judith Guglietta of Newington.
Calling hours are Saturday morning, February 3, 2018, from 10 to 12:30 at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 PM in St. Agnes Church, Haigh Ave., Niantic. Interment will be at St. Lawrence Cemetery in West Haven on a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to a scholarship to be given in Mary’s name in 2019 to a young woman aspiring to be a teacher. Checks may be made to:
