Obituary

John Paul Manavas, 91, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on December 13, 2020.
A life-long resident of New London, John was born November 18, 1929 to the late Paul and Kleoniki (Stasinos) Manavas formally of Constantinople, Greece. John attended New London Schools and was a member of the former Bulkeley Boy Class of 1949. While attending high school John played varsity football for 4 years where he served as co-captain of the team.
John was a veteran of the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Army with the 75th AAA Battalion. He was honorably discharged in 1953.
On May 25, 1957 he was united in marriage to Margaret Mary Riordan who survives him.
In 1963 John joined the New London Police Department, he served as President, Vice-President and Treasurer of the Police Benevolence Association throughout his career as a police officer. After 32 years of service, he retired and was a lifetime member of the Police Association of Connecticut. John was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Seaside Council #17. Additionally, he was a member of the Eastern Connecticut Football Officials Association. A charter member for 5 years of the semi-professional football team called the New London Pequots who competed with other semi-pro teams from surrounding states.
John enjoyed spending his time with family and rooting for the New York Giants and Boston Bruins. John is predeceased by his beloved grandson Matthew Manavas and sister Olga Loewer. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three children Teresa Harris, Maureen (Raymond) Paquette, Christopher (Kimberly) Manavas, his grandchildren Sean and Colin Paquette, Nicholas & Alexandria Manavas, Amanda, Brianna and Caitlyn Harris and his great-grandchildren Landon and Chase Paquette, Belle and Lilly Bascilla, and Ethan Paquette. He also leaves behind his sister Despina Tyropolis, sister in-laws, Barbara Lewis, Barbara Mackay, and brother in-law James Riordan, and his many nieces and nephews.
