John James Clarke, Jr. age 79 of Mystic passed on September 2, 2017 at Lawrence and
Memorial Hospital in New London after an extended illness, surrounded by his loving family.
John was born in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the only child of John and Myrtle (Leveille) Clarke.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years of marriage, Janet (Reynolds) Clarke.
He also leaves his daughter, Donna (Clarke) Peckham and Gerry of Mystic; his son, Christopher
and Lyn (Ruszyk) of Norwich; five granddaughters, Andrea (Peckham) Simmons of Stonington,
Katelyn (Peckham) Thompson of Scituate, Rhode Island, Jordan, Amy, and Chelsea Clarke of
Norwich; and two great-grandsons, Gavin Simmons of Stonington and Finn Thompson of
Scituate, Rhode Island. He also leaves his beloved dog, Caili. He was predeceased by his
eldest son, John J. Clarke III.
He attended Norwich Technical High School and later served in the US Navy Reserve He was
a trained machinist and worked at Whiton Machine Shop and Pfizer. In 1968, he started a
general contracting business and over the next 20 years built many custom homes in the area.
He and Janet, who had made their home in Gales Ferry, retired to Port Charlotte, Florida and
enjoyed 20 years meeting new friends, going boating and exploring beaches. They eventually
returned to Connecticut to be close to family, and made their home in Mystic.
He loved to boat, fish, and travel. Taking his grandchildren to Disney World was a great joy.
He enjoyed exploring his family tree and heritage. Above all, he was a loving and devoted
husband, father, and Poppy who cherished time spent with family.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday evening September 8, 2017 from 5 to 7 pm at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home 12 Ocean Avenue New London. Funeral service and Interment will be private. Contributions in John’s memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
