Charland, John Henri

John Henri Charland, 82, of Niantic passed away on Saturday November 7, 2009 at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital in New London.
He was born in Hartford on October 14, 1927 the son of the late Annabelle Carmody and Emile Charland and resided in New Britain, Hartford, Newington and Niantic.

After graduation from Hartford Public High School, John served in the U.S.Navy. He attended New England Conservatory and Boston University for his undergraduate studies. He completed his graduate studies at the University of Connecticut. He taught for many years in the towns of Berlin and Wethersfield, acting as supervisor for the Wethersfield music program. An accomplished violin and violist, John performed with the Hartford, New Britain and Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestras as well as in chamber music groups both professional and informal that even included his musical children and grandchildren. John loved his years spent living on the Niantic River and playing golf.

He was predeceased by his wife Jean Catherine Scrimminger and survived by children, Christopher Charland and spouse Christine, John Charland and spouse Patricia all of Niantic and daughter Julie and spouse Gary Ribchinsky of Ivoryton. He is also survived by grandchildren Peter Charland and spouse Stacy, Jesse Charland, Aaron Ribchinsky, Leah Ribchinsky and Eva Ribchinsky. 1 sister Jane Corrigan of Niantic.

John was also predeceased by his wife Aurise Beaudreau of Niantic. He was a member of the Church of St. Agnes of Niantic.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital c/o Coronary Care Unit 365 Montauk Ave. New London, Ct. 06320.

Funeral will assemble on Thursday at 10:15 at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home 48 Grand Street Niantic to a 11 O'clock Mass of Christian Burial at St. Agnes Church Haigh Street Niantic. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery Niantic.
