Montville- John Ayres, 66, of Uncasville, died November 28, 2017 at his home. He was born in Providence, R.I. September 19, 1951.
John is a graduate of LaSalle Academy in Providence, R.I. He received his bachelor’s degree from Rhode Island College, with a major in French literature and minors in English literature and education. He received a master’s in education from the University of Rhode Island, and went to the LaSallien Center in Windsor, Ohio, for religious studies.
He began teaching in 1973 at LaSalle Academy, did a short stint at Saint Bernard in 1976 and returned to LaSalle from 1977 through 1981. In 1981, he again applied to Saint Bernard where he taught French and AP European History for nearly four decades. John retired from teaching in June 2017.
Over the years, John received numerous acknowledgements. He served on New England Association of Schools visiting committees and was co-chair during Saint Bernard’s most recent accreditation. He was coordinator for World Language and art on the Academic Leadership Council, and was an invaluable asset to the school’s campus ministers. John was instrumental in the success of the Saint Bernard Drama Program, serving as its director for many years.
John was presented with the 2014 Theodore James Ryken Award for his commitment to the mission of Saint Bernard School and his dedication to the values of the Xaverian Brothers.
At the time, Headmaster Don Macrino called John “a man who tries to follow God’s will in the common, ordinary, unspectacular flow of everyday life and by doing so has had a profound impact upon the lives or his students and colleagues.”
John leaves no survivors.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 6:30 PM on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 in Sat. John the Evangelist Church in Montville. Interment of his ashes will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery, Johnston, R.I. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. Bernard School Scholarship Fund. The Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
