Obituary

Waterford – John Anthony Mingo, 75, of 69 Spithead Road passed away on April 11, 2013.

Mr. Mingo was born on July 25, 1937 in New York City, the first son of John and Flerida Mingo. He married the former Mary Lou Wolod on August 20, 1960 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in West Haven, Connecticut. He was a 1952 graduate of St. Joseph School in New London and 1956 graduate of the New London High School. He also attended the University of Connecticut before being employed at Electric Boat Research and Development Department, retiring in 1996 after 38 years, 24 as the Supervisor of the Engineering and Technical Services Laboratory, Tech Lab.

Mr. Mingo was active in Waterford youth sports Little League, Babe Ruth, and Football. He was an avid fresh-water fisherman wining several first place trophies. He was a charter member of Louie Land, John's Club and the Knights of Columbus at Storrs Connecticut. He was a life member of Waterford Fire Company No. 1 and Waterford Ambulance. As an active member he held many offices from Trustee to Captain and was selected Outstanding Fireman of the Year 1971. He was also Fire Commissioner for the Jordan Fire District, a position he held for nine years. He was an active member of the New England Division of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, a member of the Niantic Knights of Columbus Council No. 5633 and a communicant of St. Paul's Church in Chains of Waterford.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons Michael Mingo, Mark Mingo and his wife Krista of Waterford, and two daughters, Mary Ellen Spera of Delaware and Jennifer Ann Mingo of Waterford, his three loving grandchildren, Tyler Mingo, Samantha Mingo and Spencer Bailey, two brothers Robert Mingo and his wife Robin of Wisconsin and Richard Mingo and his wife Sharon of East Lyme and numerous nieces and nephews.

Contributions in his honor may be made to the Waterford Ambulance Association, Waterford Fire Department No. 1 (Jordan) and Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, from 5 to 7 pm at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Avenue, New London.

The funeral procession will assemble on Tuesday, 10:15 am from the funeral home and proceed to St. Joseph Church, 17 Squire Street, New London. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Jefferson Avenue, New London.
