Obituary

Harriet Sylvia Kitay Friedstein passed away peacefully at 1:30AM on Friday November 2, 2018, at Fairview in Groton, CT with her son and daughter by her side. Born on January 12, 1931 in Brooklyn, New York, to Philip Kitay, a pharmacist and Estelle (Feldman) Kitay, a homemaker, she lived most of her youth in New York where she graduated from Hunter College with a Bachelor’s degree in music and additional studies in French. With her then-husband Jack Friedstein (still living in Groton, CT), she moved to Huntsville, Alabama then to Groton where she lived the rest of her life.
After Harriet’s family, music was the love of her life - teaching, learning, performing, accompanying others. She taught music in the Waterford school system, taught piano and organ to students of all ages and levels in her home studio for many years and worked as an organist in various communities in Southeastern Connecticut. She also played the viola.
Harriet was involved in the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra and was a founder of the Youth Orchestra and the Young Artist Award Competition of the Eastern Connecticut Symphony.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by a sister Rita Kitay Yulsman.
Harriet leaves behind her beloved son Elliot Friedstein of Groton CT, her beloved daughter Grace Landsberg and husband Ed of South Windsor, CT, and her granddaughters Sarah Himmelstein also of South Windsor and Rebecca Himmelstein of Worcester MA, and her nephew Tom Yulsman of Niwot Colorado.
A private burial took place on November 5 at Beth El Cemetery in Groton, CT.
