Obituary

Waterford - Francis J. Silvestri, 91, of Waterford passed away on Thursday, October 26, 2017 surrounded by his loving family.
Frank was born in Hartford on February 13, 1926 to Nicholas and Giacomina (Miceli) Silvestri. After moving to New London at age five, Frank attended St. Mary’s School until his father passed away in 1941. Like many from “the greatest generation,” Frank cut his education short to help support his mother and siblings. Always a family man, he cited his mother as the most influential person in his life.
In July of 1944, Frank was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve in World War II. He spent 18 months overseas in France, Germany, Poland, and Austria, where he served in the 232nd infantry regiment and the 42nd infantry division as an anti-tank gun crewman. Upon his discharge in 1946, Frank was awarded numerous medals for his service.
After his discharge, Frank rekindled a relationship with Janet (Shields) Silvestri, who would become the one and only love of his life. He began a 24-year career as a firefighter at the Groton Submarine Base in 1959, during which time he received many commendations for his service. More importantly to Frank, he fathered seven children with Janet, whom he married on September 18, 1948. The family he started with Janet - and their 66 years of marriage - was truly the greatest pride in Frank’s life.
After retiring from the Sub Base, Frank immersed himself in his family and his favorite hobbies - fishing, “junking,” and fixing anything that was broken. He especially enjoyed working on lawnmowers, outboard motors, snow blowers, automobiles, and anything else with an engine. He also spent a great deal of his retired life with his wife, adult children, and grandchildren.
Frank was predeceased by his wife, Janet Silvestri, and his brother Vincent Silvestri. He is survived by his sister Rose Cepeda, and his seven children: Bruce Silvestri and his wife Susan, of Waterford; David Silvestri and his partner Sarah Williams, of Manheim, Pa.; Jacqueline Ethier of Old Towne, Maine; Sandra Gaetano and her husband Leonard, of Waterford; Diane Johnson, of Waterford; Pamela Tashea and her husband Peter, of Groton; and Susan Reay of Waterford. He also has 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Frank was truly the “patriarch” of his family, and will be sadly missed.
Calling hours are from 10:00AM to 11:00AM Monday. The funeral service will be conducted at 11:00AM on Monday at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, New London.
The Silvestri family would like to thank the staff at the L&M Critical Care Unit for their kindness and support. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be directed to the L&M Cancer Center. Condolence messages may be left at Frank’s memorial page at www.neilanfuneralhome.com.
