Mrs. Elizabeth Mary Collins Kenyon of New London passed away peacefully on Monday June 19, 2017, asleep in her bed at 8:30 in the morning one day after her 97th birthday.
"Betty", as she was known by those close to her, was born in New London June 18th, 1920 the fourth child of seven to the late Helen Patricia Boyle and William Collins. When she was born the community of New London rejoiced, printing "Little Miss Dell has arrived" in the New London Day paper, Dell Avenue being the name of the street her parents lived on. Betty attended Harbor school, graduated from Williams Memorial Institute, Class of 1938, going on to graduate from the New London Business College in 1940. After college she worked for Ealahan Electric, the New London Tax Department, and the Democratic Party at the State Legislature under Mr. Chester Bowles.
On September 16, 1941 she entered a fruitful and loving marriage to Morton Kenyon which lasted for 67 years until Morton's death in 2008. In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by brothers William, James, and Donald, Sister Mary Pero, and grandson Collin Kenyon.
Betty's life was centered around her faith, family, friends, and enjoying the simple things in life. A lifelong New London resident Betty grew up in St. Joseph's Parish, until her marriage and then attended St. Mary's where all of her children attended school. Mort and Betty with their family and friends enjoyed many days at Ocean Beach Park, dancing to the Big Bands, and celebrating every occasion of their children and their friends children be it a baptism, graduation, sports event, or marriage. In retirement Betty and Mort were "Island people" spending their winters in Puerto Rico and their summers on Fisher's Island where they made many friends. They loved to travel, read, watch birds and the night sky. They loved to entertain, and many in New London still consider Crystal Avenue one of New London's best restaurants, where the doors were always open.
She leaves behind her nine children: son Morton Kenyon and wife Susan, son Wesley and wife Linda, daughter Carol, daughter Elizabeth Connolly, son Kevin and wife Nancy, daughter Kathie Kenyon and husband Bill Zaneski, son Richard and wife Claudia, daughter Susan, and son Timothy. In addition, she leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren: granddaughter Jennifer O'Quinn and husband James with children William, Collin and wife Emily, James, Morton, Thomas, Sarah, and Jude; Stacy Kenyon and son Quinn; granddaughter Florabeth Kenyon, grandson Robert Kenyon and wife Elke with children Kai and Ella; grandson Ryan Connolly and wife Lauren, children William and Grace, grandson Neil Connolly, granddaughter Caitlin Lombardi and husband Mark with children Owen and Nora; Kevin, Erin, and Connor Kenyon; Clark Zaneski with daughter Mia, Leah LeCara and husband Kenny with children Lola and Lane, Kara O'Connor and husband Joseph with son Christian; Nicholas Kenyon and wife Lenna, Richard Kenyon; and Oliver and Miles Jennings.
A fruitful marriage indeed.
She is also survived by sisters: Helen Collins and Jean Lena and her husband Richard; by nieces and nephews of the Pero, Collins, Lena, Scanlon, Boyd, Donlelin and Delaney families; lifetime friends the Hammond, Spinello, and Gerity families, members of the "Mothers' Circle"; and her good friends from Puerto Rico the Martinez', Rochet's, Gerardi's, Bernardin's and Fisher's Island the Yakatis', Lambs' and many others.
The Kenyon family would like to extend particular thanks to Betty and Morton's longtime caregivers: Lynda Annibellini, Narcissa Valentin, Toni Simmonds, and The Center for Hospice Care. In Lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to The Center for Hospice Care, 227 Dunham Street, Norwich, CT 06360 , so that they may continue in their exemplary standard of care.
