Dorothea Buchholz Cappiello July 6, 1925 - September 21, 2017

Dorothea was born in New York City to Frederick and Elsie Buchholz. She grew up in Greenwich Village, attended City and Country School, followed by Friend’s Seminary.

From an early age, she was interested in the arts and more specifically movement in all forms. She went on to a career in Modern Dance where she studied under and taught for José Limón, Doris Humphrey, and Hanya Holm in New York City and elsewhere. After going out on her own, she taught for Stephens College, taught in Toronto and then moved back to New York City. She taught in both New York and Connecticut where she met her husband Virgilio Cappiello, through his sister Nina, who was a student of hers. She married him in 1959. They then lived in Storrs, the shoreline area, and then Windham, Connecticut, where she founded the Creative Theater Dance Studio, and began their family with their daughter Cecilia. Dorothea helped to found the Institute for Movement Exploration in Hartford, Connecticut which developed the start of what became the Master’s Degree program at Wesleyan University.

She retired from the Creative Theater Dance Studio, moved to Lyme, and was a real estate agent in the local area. She was also involved in several programs that brought movement into the local area through the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, taught for Eastern Connecticut Ballet, and ran several productions for them. She taught up until her “second retirement” at the age of 90.

She is survived by her husband Virgilio of 58 years, her daughter Cecilia Cappiello Lins-Morstadt, son-in-law Carl Lins-Morstadt, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In accordance with Dorothea’s wishes, there will be a celebration of life at Neilan Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic, CT 06357 on Saturday September 30, 2017 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
