Obituary

Waterford - Carole L. Martin, 82, of Waterford, peacefully passed away Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017, at Connecticut Hospice in Branford.

She was born in New London, Nov. 23, 1934, the daughter of Herbert and Marion (Johnson) Avery. She was a graduate of the former Chapman Technical High School in New London, and had been employed as a telephone operator for Southern New England Telephone. She had also worked at Waterford High School as a matron. She married Kenneth Martin in New London on April 23, 1955; he survives her.

Mrs. Martin belonged to TOPS #27 in Niantic and the Italian Club in New London. She enjoyed playing weekly card games with her friends, going to the casino and the CT Sun basketball games. She enjoyed watching UConn basketball.

In addition to her husband of 62 years, she is survived by a son, Kenneth Martin Jr. of Midlothian, Va.; a daughter, Jennifer Martin of Waterford; a brother, Thomas "Duke" Avery of Westerly; her former daughter-in-law, Nila Martin of Groton; three grandchildren, Erica Venturini, Joshua Martin and Scott Laflesh; great-grandchildren, Trevor Piper, Jordan Venturini, Jackson Venturini and Landon Venturini; and many nieces and nephews.

Carole was predeceased by two brothers and five sisters.

The funeral will assemble at 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Ave., New London, and proceed to a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 10 a.m. in St. Paul Church in Waterford. Entombment will follow in St. Mary Mausoleum. Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday.
