Niantic - Carmen Porrello, 103, of Niantic, passed away peacefully, on Saturday. April 15, 2017. Carmen was born in Manilla, Philippines on September 26, 1913 where she eventually met and married Peter Porrello, who was serving in the United States Navy, in 1938.
Carmen led an amazing life, having survived a three-year internment in the Japanese prisoner of war camp following the invasion of Manilla by the Japanese at Santo Thomas University, Manilla, Philippines with her husband and three-year-old son, Robert, from 1941 -1945 She never spoke at length regarding the experiences in the camp, but did express what unbelievable joy that was felt when the United States military entered the camp to liberate the internees. After the war, she settled with her family in Niantic, CT. Carmen was an extremely charitable and religious woman, who was always ready to assist anyone in need, or to support her local Catholic Church, or charity. She was a fabulous cook, and extremely talented at crocheting the many afghans, scarves and hats which her family and friends continue to enjoy. Carmen and her family traveled extensively to Spain, Indonesia, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Antigua, and made comfortable and inviting homes in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Panama Canal Zone, and Christmas, Florida. In spite of her extensive traveling, she always spoke of how much she loved this country, and the beauty of New England.
She is survived by her four children, Robert, of Puerto Santa Maria, Spain (Marie Carmen), Dennis, of Salem, S.C (Julie), Mary DeBriae, of Niantic, CT (Ronald), and Peter, of Niantic, CT. She was the loving and generous grandmother to five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her mother, father, eight sisters and her husband, Peter.

Niantic. Calling hours will be held from 10a.m. - 11a.m., followed by a Memorial Service from 11a.m. -12p.m.
