Obituary

Alan David DeCosta, 51, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 24th, surrounded by loved ones following a long and courageous battle with pulmonary fibrosis and cancer.

Alan was born in New London. He is the son of the Lillian (Kumfurt) and the late Kenneth DeCosta. He graduated from local schools. He married the love of his life, the former Anna Marie Bessey, on August 17th, 1974.

He retired after 25 years of service with the Teamsters Local 493 working as a route salesman for Guida's Dairy and Drakes Bakeries. He was a loving and nurturing husband, father, and grandfather. A man of great integrity, he left all he encountered with a kind word and a smile. Alan loved life and inspired others with his zest. He enjoyed traveling to new places, golfing, watching football was a devoted Miami Dolphin's fan. More than anything Alan loved spending time with his family. He felt he was meant to be a grandfather and believed ones heart always had enough love for all.

Alan was predeceased by his father, Kenneth DeCosta, a brother, Ronald DeCosta, a sister, Jeannie DeCosta, his son in law, Matthew Purwinis, and a brother in law, John Bessy III.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two daughters and a son in law, Erica Marie DeCosta Baez and her husband, Jeffrey and Christina Lynn DeCosta Purwinis. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Zachariah Christopher Alan Liuzzi, Evangeline Marie Iris Baez, David Alan Baez, Matthew Ryan Baez and Ella Alanna Rose Baez, who is expected within the next month. Also surviving are six brothers and three sisters, Robert DeCosta and his wife, Bonnie, William DeCosta and his wife, Debbie, Richard DeCosta and his significant other, Charles Martin, Gary DeCosta, Ernest DeCosta and his wife, Susan, Alice Bessette, Wayne DeCosta, Betty McMahon and her husband, Steven, and Barbara Charbonneau and her husband, Fred. Alan is survived by his wife's siblings Rita Bessey, Richard Bessey and his wife, Ann, Brenda Nafie and her husband, Charles, Ronald Bessey, Harriet Bessey, Gayle Wisniewski and her husband, Benjamin, Delia Vogel and her husband, Richard, Rebecca Barnes and her husband, Richard, and Dianne Bologna along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a family dog, Jed.

Alan will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 1st, 10:30 AM in St. James Episcopal Church, Preston. Burial will be private. Calling hours are 6-9 PM at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Ocean Avenue, New London.
